De Profundis

As part of a series of Oscar Wilde shows appearing at the Vaudeville Theatre comes this play by Frank McGuinness that is based upon the letter penned by Wilde whilst imprisoned in Reading.

Wilde was arrested for gross indecency in 1895 due to his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas and during that time eventually managed to pen the letter De Profundis, which detailed their lives together. Matt Rosenblatt now directs a story centred around that letter, in which Wilde addresses Douglas as ‘Bosie’.

For fans of the Irish playwright, this will make for an interesting and unique evening, even for those that have already seen Lady Windermere’s Fan and A Woman Of No Importance as part of this season.

Writer Frank McGuinness, who adapts the letter, is a well known talent who has a wealth of credits to his name, dating back to the 1980s. Many of his original plays have been staged in Dublin, including The Factory Girls and, more recently, Éamonn Ceann, though he has also adapted a range of other works, giving him plenty of experience prior to tackling De Profundis, and these include Ibsens’ Ghosts, The Wild Duck and A Doll’s House, the latter of which was staged at the Playhouse Theatre in London.
