Exit the King

Eugène Ionesco’s classic play, first seen in the early 1960s, finally makes its way to the National Theatre on London’s South Bank, with Rhys Ifans, Adrian Scarborough and Indira Varma amongst those taking to the stage. Patrick Marber directs the story of a long-lived King of an unnamed European Nation whose reign is coming to an end, taking audiences on the absurd and comic journey into the dark world of Ionesco’s fiction.

The cast also includes Amy Morgan, Derek Griffiths, Sarah Campbell and Debra Gillet, all working under the capable vision of Marber, whose assured direction of shows like Travesties at the Apollo Theatre and Don Juan In Soho at the Donmar Warehouse, amongst others, have made him a sought-after talent.

The focus of Exit The King is King Berenger (Ifans) and his first wife Marguerite (Varma), with the former nearing his death after (apparently) 400 years of rule and the latter trying to make him accept it. Along the way we also meet other characters like current Queen Marie, who shelters him from reality, and a Doctor trying to hammer it home, as Exit The King proceeds to its dramatic conclusion.

Originally written as the third part in Eugène Ionesco’s ‘Berenger Cycle’, Exit The King has enjoyed a long life on the stage over the years. It first premiered in 1962 and has since been staged around the world.

During that time some well known names have inhabited the role of King Berenger and on this occasion that tradition is cemented with the presence of Rhys Ifans, whose work on the stage and screen makes him a familiar name. His recent stage credits include Mood Music and A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic Theatre.

Exit The King runs at the Olivier National Theatre from Tuesday 17th July 2018.
