The Old Vic Theatre in London becomes the home to this new stage adaptation of the Ingmar Bergman classic film, Fanny & Alexander.
From its original release in the early 1980s to its continued reverence in the modern day, Fanny & Alexander is held in high regards within the film community and has fans worldwide, remaining one of the Swedish directors most iconic masterpieces alongside other must-sees like The Seventh Seal.
And for this stage version, producers can boast an impressive team that is certain to do the text justice. Stephen Beresford provides the script, with the acclaimed director Max Webster overseeing it all, ensuring that Ingmar Bergman’s story reaches the next generation of audiences.
The story takes us to the turn of the 20th century, where we meet the title characters in a fictional town in Sweden.
Fanny and Alexander have lost their father and the new man in their mother’s life belongs to the church, giving him the power to turn their entire way of life upside down.
Famously existing in many different forms, the film Fanny & Alexander was originally conceived as a television series and this is why there is a version of the film that has a runtime longer than five hours. Thus there is a lot of depth to the story and theatregoers will have a lot to digest when they witness the tale unfold at the Old Vic Theatre.
With that in mind it is no wonder the acclaimed writer Stephen Beresford was tasked with penning this stage version. The playwright is no stranger to acclaimed works, of course, having previously written The Last Of The Haussmans at the National Theatre and others during an impressive career. He is also responsible for writing the film Pride, which received awards and nominations.
And it all comes to the Old Vic Theatre in a year that welcomes various stand-out shows. 2018 also welcomes productions like Mood Music from Joe Penhall, a stage version of the classic book A Monster Calls and the celebration of Sylvia Pankurst titled Sylvia, amongst others.
Fanny & Alexander fits into all of this when it runs at the Old Vic Theatre in London from Wednesday 21st February 2018.
