The West End welcomes one of literature’s most famous pieces in 2013 as Charles Dickens’ entertains audiences at the Vaudeville Theatre. A great cast has been compiled to present this beloved piece and, as it was originally staged on tour in 2012 as part of Dickens’ bicentenary, it is a wonderful way of celebrating the work of one of the world’s most popular authors.

Various celebrations took place for the author’s 200th birthday and in addition to this tour the Charing Cross Theatre was also the home of “A Tale of Two Cities”, the Playhouse Theatre was the home of Simon Callow’s “The Mystery of Charles Dickens” and the London Palladium welcomed the “A Christmas Carol” piece “Scrooge the Musical”. So it has been a great time to be a fan of the novelist and this continues in 2013.

Great Expectations” introduces us to characters over a long period and as a result we experience many actions in various locations like Kent and London. Pip is our focus and during the 19th century he sets out to discover the truth about himself amidst great poverty, desperation and terror. It is one man’s struggle to find the answers about his life as he lives up to his ‘great expectations’.

The cast on this occasion includes the well known television actress Paula Wilcox, who stars alongside Chris Ellison, Grace Rowe, Jack Ellis, Taylor Jay Davies and Paul Nivison. These are the same performers that entertained audiences in regional theatre as part of the show’s tour.

Wilcox is well known to audiences across the country and those that pick up theatre tickets will recognise her from her work with classic sitcoms like “Man About the House”, “Miss Jones and Son”, “The Smoking Room” and “Rock & Chips”, among others. Recent years have also seen her appear in more serious programmes, whether it has been “A Touch of Frost”, “Emmerdale” or play like “Whatever Happened to the Cotton Dress Girl?”. It shows that there is plenty of reason to choose “Great Expectations” when heading to the West End in 2013.

With shows such as the classic “Uncle Vanya” preceding it, “Great Expectations” runs at the Vaudeville Theatre from Wednesday 6th February 2013 (with previews from Friday 1st February 2013).
