An epic and gripping tale comes in two parts to the stage of the Gielgud Theatre this June, providing West End audiences with the thrills and intrigue that previously enamoured those at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Imperium, Mike Poulton’s adaptation of the Cicero Trilogy by Robert Harris, appears at the venue under the direction of Gregory Doran with some wonderful performances amplifying an already-compelling piece of work.

It isn’t the first time that the Royal Shakespeare Company has tackled Roman subject matter, but it will stand-out as an RSC show to give close attention as it draws in the crowds this summer.

Conspirator is the first of the two productions under the Imperium banner, which depicts three stories focusing on Cicero (Richard McCabe) as he rises to the position of consul, angering Catiline and rising up against attempts to destroy the Roman state. Told from the point of view of his secretary Tiro (Joseph Kloska), Conspirator will take audiences on a winding and captivating tale of political one-upmanship in ancient Rome, featuring the real life figures of Cicero, Catiline and Julius Caesar. It takes elements from three of Harris’s books from the Cicero trilogy and is set between the years of 70 BC and 58 BC.

The Olivier and Tony Award-winning Richard McCabe continues to portray Cicero, having previously played the part at the Swan Theatre. He has amassed a range of stand-out credits over the years, winning acclaim for performances in Yes Prime Minister at the Apollo Theatre, Fortunes Fool at the Old Vic Theatre and The Audience at the Gielgud Theatre.

McCabe plays Cicero in both parts of this story, with Imperium II: Dictator also playing at the Gielgud Theatre this year. It will mark an unmissable opportunity for West End audiences to experience Robert Harris’s acclaimed story originally told in the novels Imperium, Lustrum and Dictator, as it repeats Swan Theatre success in a new location.

Imperium I: Conspirator, the first of a two part series, opens at the West End’s Gielgud Theatre for a run of performances that begins on Thursday 14th June 2018. From Thursday 21st June 2018 it runs concurrently with its sequel show Imperium II: Dictator.
