Once audiences have witnessed the first part of Mike Poulton’s adaptation of Robert Harris’s Cicero series, they can move on to Imperium II: Dictator. Taken from the pages of Harris’s novel of the same name, Dictator picks up the story of Roman consul Cicero and covers some famous events in Roman history.

Richard McCabe once again plays Cicero, working under the direction of Gregory Doran, and in doing so provides an insightful look at Roman politics in the West End. The popular production already earned many admirers (much like Imperium I: Conspirator) when it played at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and will once again draw the crowds when it plays at the Gielgud Theatre.

Following on from the Catilinarian Conspiracy depicted in Part I, Imperium II deals with the dictatorship, and assassination of, Julius Caesar. Rome is in a very different place following a Civil War and Cicero wishes to see the return of a Republic, but sees his hopes dashed again and again. The production features Cicero alongside other real life Roman figures like Brutus, Mark Antony and Julius Caesar, providing a captivating and powerful insight into Roman power plays.

The Cicero plays are based on the three novels from Robert Harris entitled Imperium, Lustrum and Dictator, penned between 2006 and 2015, with Imperium II: Dictator focusing on the last novel in the series. Its big selling point is not only those original novels but the writing of Mike Poulton, who adapts them to the stage. Over the years, Poulton has been responsible for some of the most talked-about period pieces in the capital and continues to make a lasting impression on both audiences and critics.

It also helps that the show is helmed by the Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Gregory Doran, who has been responsible for many high profile shows for the Stratford-upon-Avon company. This year also sees him director King Lear for the RSC, whilst his other recent credits include The Tempest and Death of a Salesman.

But the Imperium series he once again brings his work to the West End. Imperium II: Dictator runs at the Gielgud Theatre from Thursday 21st June 2018.
