London has welcomed many Hollywood stars to its popular stage productions over the years, whether it is Bryan Cranston in Network at the National Theatre or Cuba Gooding Jr. in Chicago at the Phoenix Theatre.

But not to be outdone, the Trafalgar Studios is also welcoming a big name star, with Orlando Bloom set to portray the title character in Killer Joe under the direction of Simon Evens this summer. It will be an unbeatable opportunity to witness the performance of a star whose work has been seen on the stage and screen on both sides of the Atlantic.

Killer Joe will be familiar to audiences not only for the play that first appeared in the 1990s but also for the 2011 film version which was adapted by the original play’s writer Tracy Letts.

It takes us to Texas and introduces us to Joe Cooper (Bloom), a hitman hired by Chris Smith and Ansel Smith to take out Ansel’s ex-wife Adele in order to claim the insurance money. What begins as a potential simple job soon turns upside down when the Smiths discover that the recipient of the insurance money is not who they original thought, making payment impossible and forcing Joe to take matters into his own hands.

The film version starred Matthew McConaughey as Joe, whilst the show’s UK debut in the 1990s starred Eric Winzenried at the Bush and Vaudeville Theatres.

Now it is the turn of Orlando Bloom to put his own stamp on the character. He will also provide an instantly familiar face for theatregoers, who will not only recognise him from the Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit trilogies (as Legolas) but also the Pirates Of The Caribbean series, The Three Musketeers and Troy, amongst others.

But this won’t be the first time he has stepped onto a West End stage, having also appeared in productions like David Storey’s In Celebration at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

So it is clear that Killer Joe cannot come soon enough and it heads to the Trafalgar Studios 1 on Whitehall on Friday 18th May 2018, following on from the production of The Grinning Man, which ends its run earlier that month.
