The Menier Chocolate Factory is no stranger to high profile shows that attract as much attention as their West End counterparts. With that in mind all eyes will be on the Southwark venue from March as it welcomes this adaptation of Manuel Puig’s popular novel Kiss Of The Spider Woman, taking us to a Buenos Aires jail in the process.

Laurie Sansom directs the production from José Rivera and Allan Baker’s script, with Samuel Barnett and Declan Bennett taking on the roles of prison inmates (parts played by William Hurt and Raúl Juliá for the big screen version).

Their characters are Luis Albert Molina and Velentin Arregui Paz, the latter a revolutionary and the former far removed from that background and despite their differing life experiences we explore their friendship in behind bars. During the course of Kiss Of The Spider Woman we witness this development in a thought-provoking exploration that will undoubtedly win over London audiences much as it did on previous ventures to the stage since the 1980s.

The late writer Manuel Puig penned numerous novels and plays prior to his death in 1990, which often touched upon politically charged themes. In addition to his 1976 novel Kiss Of The Spider Woman, he also penned novels like The Buenos Aires Affair, Betrayed By Rita Haywarth and Blood Of Requited Love, amongst others, whilst also tackling stage productions like Under A Mantle Of Stars.

He has many fans and they will find his work in safe hands with director Laurie Sansom, who has plenty of experience of bringing high profile works to the stage. The former Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland, he has helmed the likes of The Driver’s Seat and The James Plays, to name but two.

So all in all, this will be a play that stays in the mind and ensures crowds of theatregoers flocking to the Menier Chocolate Factory, a London venue that regularly attracts big shows and sometimes provides the breeding ground for future West End hits.

Kiss Of The Spider Woman runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Wednesday 21st March 2018 (previews from Thursday 8th March 2018).
