La Boheme

Puccini’s opera is transformed as it heads to the Trafalgar Studios this December, with the Paris of the 1830s swapped out for the East London of the 2010s by writers Adam Spreadbury-Maher and Becca Marriott.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to revisit a classic text reinterpreted for modern audiences as Puccini’s classic score accompanies a compelling narrative.

So for this latest staging of La Bohème we find ourselves in Dalston, where we meet the characters of Ralph and Mimi (replacing the original’s Radolpho and Mimi) and witness the tragic trajectory of their romance.

It is an opera that is breathed with new life more than a century since it was first staged in Turin in 1896. So whilst it is highly regarded and influential, the new version proves there’s still room with reinterpretation.

Writer and director Adam Spreadbury-Maher is an acclaimed director whose work has earned numerous awards in the capital, particularly in his capacity as Artistic Director of the King’s Head Theatre. His production of La Bohème won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Opera when it was staged at the Soho Theatre in 2011 and he has also had success with various other awards shows as well, demonstrating his widespread appeal.

So audiences are in for a treat as La Bohème runs at the Trafalgar Studios 2 from Wednesday 6th December 2017.
