Labour of Love

Over the years we have seen an array of shows with a political edge grab audiences in the West End and many have come from the pen of James Graham. Now, in 2017, he returns with one his most gripping and hilarious yet.

The Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End will offer audiences the chance to journey away from the Westminster elite in the latter part of 2017 with the play Labour Of Love. A look into the goings-on of a northern constituency, this will provide a hilarious take on the political world as popularity and ideology collide.

But whilst the presence of a script by James Graham will be enough to entice audiences, aided by the direction of Jeremy Herrin, it’s the casting of both Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig that ensures plenty of attention when the show opens in September. The duo provides the contrasting principles of a politician whilst providing familiar faces for audiences.

The story takes us to the North of England where we meet the Labour MP David Lyons and his constituency agent Jean Whittaker. They must work together to succeed, but they have contrasting attitudes towards their profession, with the politician focused on his popularity and whether people will vote for him and his agent having a more principled view of politics. A comedy with a strong political message, Labour Of Love is the latest play from Graham to delve into the British political world following hits like The Vote and This House.

These are just two of Graham’s plays to take a magnifying glass to politics. During his career he has penned an array of acclaimed shows at venues like the Donmar Warehouse, the National Theatre and the Soho Theatre, amongst other locations. From his early work like Tory Boyz at the Soho Theatre to recent additions like The Angry Brigade at the Theatre Royal Plymouth and Privacy at the Donmar Warehouse, he has a distinct voice in the world of British theatre.

And his latest work will reach a wide audience thanks to the casting of Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig, the former world-famous thanks to his work on The Office, The Hobbit Trilogy and more. He has been a regular presence on the small and big screens for almost two decades.

Labour Of Love runs at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End from Friday 15th September 2017.

Note: Sarah Lancashire was originally cast in the production and has since withdrawn. Her part is now played by Tamsin Greig.
