Life and Fate

This May, audiences in the West End will be treated to the return of the Maly Drama Theatre of St Petersburg as they present two shows at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. One is the classic Uncle Vanya, but the other is a UK premiere in the form of Life And Fate.

The company first presented Life And Fate back in 2007 and finally bring it to the UK. Based on Vasily Grossman’s classic novel, it explores the Soviet Union and a Jewish family’s perspective on the strife. The family at hand is the Shtrum family and the horrors they experience have remained with audiences since the novel was first encountered.

When the book first emerged it was banned and Grossman suffered by the hand of the KGB, meaning that it was many years before the Maly Drama Theatre’s Artistic Director Lev Dovin got his hands on it. But now it has become a must-see play and it appears in the West End in its original Russian and with English surtitles.

Life And Fate appears at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 18th, 19th and 20th May 2018.
