The Merry Wives of Windsor RSC

The Royal Shakespeare Company presents a new season of shows at the Barbican Theatre from late-2018 and in doing so offers London theatregoers with their latest opportunities to witness some of the most famous Shakespearean productions around.

One production appearing during the season is this new version of The Merry Wives Of Windsor, which runs from December to January and with David Troughton taking on the lead role. It will take Shakespeare’s classic play and give it a modern spin, with Fiona Laird calling the shots as director.

Its story focuses on the iconic character of Sir John Falstaff, transformed from a large knight who lived hundreds of years ago into a man living in the suburbs, and we meet him as he concocts a plan to get rich. He soon has a run-in with the ‘merry wives of Windsor’ as he attempts to seduce them, hoping to get the riches of their wealthy husbands, but soon realises that they hold the power and plan to make him an example.

The show features an array of characters familiar to theatregoers the world over, from Falstaff to Bardolph, Robert Shallow and Mistress Alice Ford, amongst others.

And with performers like David Troughton bringing the characters to life, audiences are in for a treat. Troughton’s many years on the stage and screen prove he is a great choice to play Falstaff for the RSC, with credits like Inherit The Wind at the Old Vic Theatre and both King Lear and The Shoemaker’s Holiday for the RSC. Onscreen he has appeared in the likes of New Tricks and is also well known for his long tenure on radio’s The Archers.

He appears in The Merry Wives Of Windsor at the Barbican Theatre from Friday 7th December 2018. The RSC season also includes productions of Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth.
