Joe Penhall, the writer of the Laurence Olivier Award-winning Sunny Afternoon, returns to London with this new play Mood Music, showing at the Old Vic Theatre in April 2018.

With Roger Michell directing and some further talented individuals working on and off the stage, Mood Music will showcase Penhall at his best as we focus on a story driven by music and the creative process.

It comes to the Old Vic in a busy year, with the likes of A Monster Calls and Sylvia coming to the venue in 2018, and it is deservedly premiering on one of the capital’s most prestigious stages.

The story centres on the struggles of making music as we find ourselves in a high-end recording studio here in London. During the course of the show we witness the politics of music unfold as battles form between the creatives, the legals and the therapists for their part of the parcel.

An insightful and compelling story that will interest anyone who has been curious about the creative process in the business world, Mood Music will be a unique look at a different side of the music world.

But then, Joe Penhall is already known for penning compelling work, having put together the Olivier Award-winning Sunny Afternoon, which premiered at the Hampstead Theatre before appearing at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre. It isn’t the only show on his CV, however, as he has also penned a host of shows to appear at the Royal Court Theatre, like Birthday, Haunted Child and Dumb Show, amongst others.

But now he sets his sights on Mood Music, the latest show to appear at the Old Vic Theatre, which opens at the London venue on Saturday 21st April 2018.
