The Olivier National Theatre welcomes this play from Timberlake Wertenbaker based on the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally. A story that takes audiences back to the Australia of 1788, Our Country’s Good looks at prisoners and their path to redemption in the colonial times of the land down under.

The production is directed by Nadia Fall, an acclaimed practitioner who has been behind a range of shows that have previously been staged on South Bank. Meanwhile, composition comes from Cerys Matthews, the acclaimed singer-songwriter from Welsh band Catatonia.

Our Country’s Good takes those with theatre tickets to Botany Bay, the location in which English convicts arrive at the Australian colony to service their sentences. We then witness their journey from this moment to the process of putting on a play. There are many options awaiting them when they arrive down under and the play could provide them with the hope they need to stay in line and it might also provide a life-changing journey for those in charge as well.

Thomas Keneally’s The Playmaker was adapted by Timberlake Wertenbaker back in the 1980s and has since provided a compelling and moving production for audiences. It was first staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1988.

Its latest appearance on a British stage is directed by Nadia Fall, whose career has included numerous productions for the National Theatre like The Doctor’s Dilemma and Chewing Gum Dreams. But her work has also been seen away from South Bank, like Hobson’s Choice at the Regent’s Park Open air Theatre. She was also the Associate Director of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Our Country’s Good runs at the Olivier National Theatre from Wednesday 19th August 2015.
