Every year audiences descend upon Regent’s Park for the annual summer season of the Open Air Theatre, presented by its Artistic Director Timothy Sheader.

This year offers an array of unmissable shows and amongst them is this revival of a play that is rarely seen in the Nation’s capital, despite being the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, and that is Our Town by Thornton Wilder. This unique and enlightening story allows theatregoers to explore the inhabitants of a US town in the early 20th century, whilst remaining in the confines of a theatre…

The story was first told in the late 1930s and sees audiences remain in the theatre, with the main actor portraying the ‘stage manager’ and delving into the lives of those living in the fictional town of Grover’s Corner, USA between 1901 and 1903. Ellen McDougal will direct as we explore the intricacies, the pitfalls and the choices in life, with everything it might throw at you.

Thornton Wilder, who penned the piece in the 1930s, had a successful career, winning the Pulitzer Prize not only for this show but also for 1942’s The Skin Of Our Teeth and his novel The Bridge Of San Luis Rey. From the 1920s onwards he penned plays like The Merchant Of Yonkers, The Trumpet Shall Sound and Childhood, amongst others, whilst also contributing to the Alfred Hitchcock film Shadow Of A Doubt.

And with Our Town his legacy is intact as it returns to the stage for the 2019 season at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, appearing alongside the likes of Hansel & Gretel, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Evita.
