Every summer, crowds descend upon Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre to see one of the season’s must-see productions. Following on from Hansel and Gretel and A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Our Town. Written by Thornton Wilder, the play was first performed in 1938 and went on to become an award-winning text including a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony. So, if you want to see a play written by a multi Pulitzer-winning playwright, as well as catch a play that’s irregularly performed in the West End, you’ll want to see Our Town.

At Our Town, you’ll be able to peer into the lives of those living in the fictional town of Grover’s Corner, USA between 1901 and 1903. The play explores life, love and death on a tight-knit community, as the intricacies, the pitfalls and the choices in life are examined with a fine-toothed comb. The main actor portrays the ‘stage manager’ in the play within a play setting in a unique and enlightening story. Theatregoers can learn about the humdrum way of life in the USA whilst in the comfort of their own seat.

Other plays written by Thornton Wilder include The Skin of Our Teeth, The Merchant of Yonkers and The Trumpet Shall Sound. But with a play that’s full of bittersweet moments, Our Town is a dramatised narrative of the realities of life that stands out as one of Wilder’s leading works. Make sure you’ve got your ticket for Our Town, as well as Evita which concludes the 2019 season at the theatre.
