All attention will be on London’s Wyndham’s Theatre this January as comic actor Rowan Atkinson returns to the West End for a starring role in Simon Gray’s “Quartermaine’s Terms”. It will be an unbeatable opportunity to witness the star of many beloved British television shows on the stage as he returns to the capital for the first time since he played Fagin in “Oliver the Musical” at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. It will also be the latest chance to see the work of Gray on the stage, whose death in 2008 left a legacy of well known plays that ensure his lasting presence in the capital.

St John Quartermaine is a very pleasant man to those around him and this is likely a result of his loneliness and it does not, unfortunately, translate to his being a good teacher at the Cambridgeshire School that teaches English to foreigners. He does not have any friends outside of the school and this is likely to be the reason he is always available to those around him when they wish to vent their own feelings of loneliness. This theme of being alone is prevalent in the piece and makes the play a profound and compelling one that will stay in the mind.

Simon Gray penned it in 1981 and it was one of many pieces of work to make him a celebrated playwright as it mixed serious themes with – at times – comic overtones. Amongst his other works at the time were “Stage Struck”, which appeared at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1979, “The Common Pursuit” at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1984 and “Hidden Laughter” at the Vaudeville in 1990. Following his death in 2008 the Trafalgar Studios 1 was the home of his final play penned before his passing entitled “The Last Cigarette”, which featured Felicity Kendal among its cast members.

Rowan Atkinson needs little introduction and his career has seen him take on many iconic roles, from the much-loved “Mr Bean” to Edmund Blackadder in the “Blackadder” series. He has also appeared in “Hot Shots Part Deux”, “Johnny English”, “Johnny English Reborn” and the classic television show “Not the Nine O’Clock News”.

“Quartermaine’s Terms” is at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Tuesday 29th January 2013 (previews from Wednesday 23rd January 2013) to Saturday 13th April 2013.
