Summer and Smoke

Plays written by Tennessee Williams are often seen in the West End, with recent shows including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 2017 starring Sienna Miller or A Streetcar Named Desire with Rachel Weisz. However, it’s not as often that Summer and Smoke is performed in the West End. Having entertained audiences at the Almeida Theatre, the production is enjoying a transfer to the Duke of York’s Theatre before closing on 19th January 2019. A mysterious play set in early 20th century Mississippi, it’s the story of how a young woman Alma learns more about herself under the influence of John, a seemingly-worldly doctor. So, if it’s an old story rejuvenated for a modern audience that you’re after, then you’ll want to catch Summer and Smoke before it closes.

In the intimate surroundings of the Duke of York’s Theatre, you’ll feel as though you’ve been sent to the American South. When Alma, a young minister’s daughter becomes infatuated with her next door neighbour, her father is concerned. Growing closer to her neighbour John, the pair become intoxicated with each other, finding out about themselves through working with each other to really get at what they desire. Trapped between their desires and what others expect of them, Summer and Smoke is a passionate, intense production on a minimal stage to really show how their spiritualties and sexualities clash.

This atmospheric production taps into what made Tennessee Williams’ writing so successful when Summer and Smoke was first performed on Broadway in 1948. Even though Williams’ Pulitzers were for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire, the poignancy of this text should not go unnoticed. One of his lesser-performed masterpieces, make sure you’ve got your tickets to one of the final few performances for Summer and Smoke.
