Summer and Smoke

The work of Tennessee Williams is always welcome in London’s West End, as seen by previous appearances of successful shows like Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and The Glass Menagerie. 2018, however has been the turn of his 1947 play Summer And Smoke, which has enjoyed a top-selling revival at the Almeida Theatre in Islington.

That production now makes its way to the West End, entertaining audiences at the Duke of York’s Theatre for a run that begins in the autumn and continues into the New Year. Rebecca Frecknall directs, whilst performers like Seb Carrington reprise their acclaimed roles.

Set in the first 16 years of the 20th century, Summer And Smoke introduces us to the character of Alma, a young Mississippi woman who meets John during her early years and, as an adult, a romance nearly begins. Upending her whole world, John’s proposals go against her world view and time will tell how their lives will change going forwards as Alma leaves her old self behind.

First seen in Dallas and then on Broadway in 1948, Summer And Smoke is a relatively early play from the acclaimed American playwright, whose work also consisted of the mentioned Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and The Glass Menagerie, plus Sweet Bird Of Youth and A Streetcar Named Desire, amongst others, during a career that lasted up to his death in 1983.

The show got its London premiere many decades later, with a run at the West End’s Apollo Theatre in 2006, so this new revival is a welcome one, with critics loving the direction and performances of Carrington, Nancy Crane, Patsy Ferran, Eric MacLennan, Forbes Masson, Matthew Needham, Tok Stephen and Anjana Vasan. All return for the run at the Duke of York’s Theatre, ready for London theatregoers to experience their unforgettable work.

The show concludes a solid year for the Duke Of York’s Theatre, which is the home of Glyndebourne Opera celebration The Moderate Soprano early in the summer and also welcomes Sir Ian McKellen in King Lear until November.

Summer And Smoke then plays at the West End venue for performances from Tuesday 20th November 2018 (previews from 10th November 2018).
