A play that has been entertaining audiences since 2014 makes its way to the West End from November, giving audiences a chance to witness events through the eyes of the late author Patricia Highsmith. Joanna Murray-Smith’s play heads to the Ambassadors Theatre with Phyllis Logan reprising her role as the author after previously playing the part at the Theatre Royal Bath.

Between the 1940s and the 1990s, Patricia Highsmith penned an array of popular novels that have stood the test of time, remaining popular in the decades since they were first penned. Amongst them were Strangers On A Train (adapted into the famous Alfred Hitchcock film), The Talented Mr Ripley (adapted into a film with Matt Damon), The Terrapin and The Blunderer, to name but a few. She won numerous awards and her work was adapted for the stage, screen and radio.

With Switzerland, the focus is on her life in the titular country where she spent her later years. Set in the mid-1990s, Highsmith (Logan) has retreated to her study in the Swiss Alps and she relishes in the seclusion that it offers her. However, this seclusion is broken by the arrival of a New York publisher who wishes for her to return to the ‘Ripliad’ and pen a new novel with the character of Tom Ripley. But there’s a darkness to this gentleman, with the potential for a secret agenda.

Writer Joanna Murray-Smith pens the piece, drawing on her many years as a successful writer. She is responsible for the show Honour in the mid-1990s, which would earn numerous Tony and Laurence Olivier Award nominations, as well as Scenes From A Marriage, Bombshells and The Female Of The Species. Her play Switzerland was first staged in Australia in 2014.

And now it heads to the West End with Phyllis Logan as Patricia Highsmith. The performer is best known for her screen appearances in the likes of Downton Abbey and Secrets & Lies, with stage work such as Marvin’s Room at the Hampstead Theatre and Present Laughter at the Theatre Royal Bath. She stars alongside Calum Findlay in Switzerland.

Audiences can see Switzerland when it runs at the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre from Monday 19th November 2018 (previews from Saturday 10th November 2018) to Saturday 5th January 2018.
