Over the last few centuries, the work of a handful of writers has stood-out amongst the rest so that it is still celebrated in the 21st century. One of those is Molière, the French playwright who penned an array of texts that are still performed in the West End today, with recent examples being The Misanthrope and The Miser in the last decade.

Another of Molière’s texts is Tartuffe, his famous comedy that introduced audiences to iconic characters like Orgon and Elmire back in the 17th century. Over the years the text has been translated and adapted, whilst the original evolved through various incarnations until its standard was settled in 1669.

It is Tartuffe that now returns to the West End, but it does so in a new form, with Christopher Hampton penning this modern day update that will be performed with both English and French surtitles, with the characters remaining intact but its locale changed to 21st century Los Angeles.

It means that whilst we still meet the characters of Orgon, his wife Elmire and the manipulative Tartuffe in the production, they take on new roles. Orgon is now a French filmmaker who has just arrived in Hollywood, with Elmire remaining his wife and Tartuffe now an evangelical.

But despite the changes audiences know they will be in safe hands thanks to the presence of Christopher Hampton, who provides the script for Gérald Garutti to direct. Hampton previously translated the text for the Royal Shakespeare Company in the early 1980s and has provided a wealth of translations for plays from the likes of Florian Zeller (including The Father and The Truth, which both appeared at the Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End). His own original plays have also made a mark, with examples like Tales From Hollywood, White Chameleon, The Talking Cure and Appomattox, amongst others.

So he has the perfect mind to bring Tartuffe back to the stage in the 21st century, ensuring a new generation of theatergoers get to experience the spirit of Molière’s original text. It makes this one of 2018’s more intriguing shows and an unmissable treat for fans of the 17th century playwright.

Tartuffe runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Tuesday 29th May 2018 (previews from Friday 25th May 2018).
