Capitalism, the American Dream, the class system. It all came crumbling down in the late 1920s as the Great Depression took a hold and families were forced to make some tough decisions.

That’s the focus of The American Clock, the 1980 play from Arthur Miller that makes its way to Old Vic Theatre this February, fusing the iconic writing of Miller with one of the world’s most exciting directors in Rachel Chavkin. The result will be another must-see production on one of London’s most famous stages as audiences are taken on a compelling and memorable journey through 1930s America.

The focus is on the Baum family, who have lost everything thanks to the stock market crash and the depression that ripped so many apart. Forced to relocate from Manhattan to Brooklyn, they must face a new world without their wealth and with their dreams forever changed. Characters include the son Lee Baum, who narrates, Moe Baum and Rose Baum, amongst others.

The play mixes a great soundtrack into the mix as well, taking audiences back to the swinging style of the era and truly transports audiences from the Old Vic to the world of the time.

Director Rachel Chavkin in an award-winning American practitioner whose credits have earned her numerous awards and nominations, including a Tony Award nomination in 2017 for Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812. That remains her best known work, having been staged in New York since 2013 and exploded when it landed on Broadway in 2016. Her other credits include The Royale in New York, Hadestown in New York (and in Edinburgh) and Three Pianos, also in New York.

So as part of a season that also includes performances of Miller’s All My Sons with Bill Pullman and Sally Field, audiences can also revisit one of his later plays as The American Clock runs at the Old Vic Theatre from Monday 4th February 2019.
