Over the years we have witnessed some acclaimed political plays as they have graced the stages of the West End, from those focused on British politics like Labour Of Love or This House, to those that have taken their cues from the other side of the Atlantic, like Frost/Nixon.

One show that has remained elusive, however, belongs to the latter category - The Best Man, which premiered in the United States back in 1960 but is yet to appear in Theatreland.

All of this is about to change as Gore Vidal’s classic political drama makes its way to the Playhouse Theatre on the back of a successful UK tour, with Martin Shaw and Maureen Lipman amongst the cast members.

The Best Man delves into the heart of the American political cycle – the US Presidential election. In this case the characters are seeking the nomination for their party’s Presidential candidate as primary season is in full swing, with Martin Shaw playing William Russell alongside Jeff Fahey as his opponent Joseph Cantwell.

As such two campaigns go head to head, with tumultuous wrangling that also brings some heavy hitters into the mix, with all of the mud-slinging, endorsements and desperate meetings that come with it.

In addition to Shaw, Lipman and Fahey, the cast also includes Glynis Barber, Jack Shepherd and Honeysuckle Weeks working under the direction of Simon Evans.

That cast alone should be enough to entice audiences to the Playhouse Theatre, but it is the name Gore Vidal that will catch the attention of political junkies in the capital. One of the most significant voices in American politics in the 20th century, the commentator, novelist and playwright was responsible for many works before his death in 2012 and during his lifetime saw many revivals of The Best Man since its 1960 premiere. He also adapted it into a 1964 film.

But now it is the turn of West End audiences to witness the show as American politics lands in the capital. It has been a long time coming and it is likely to be one of the year’s must-see shows.

Gore Vidal’s The Best Man runs at the Playhouse Theatre from Monday 5th March 2018 (previews from Saturday 24th February 2018).
