The Birthday Party

Harold Pinter was arguably one of the most respected and admired British playwrights of the 20th century, writing a wealth of famous plays that have entertained audiences around the world ever since the 1950s. With awards and accolades to his name, he had a defining effect on the theatre industry as a whole.

This is demonstrated not only in his body of work but also the venue that bears his name – the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End. This is fitting as it is the location that welcomes the latest revival of his work in 2018 as The Birthday Party makes a triumphant return to the capital with some star names in lead roles.

Amongst them is the powerhouse performer Toby Jones, admired for a wealth of stage and screen work, alongside popular comic performer Stephen Mangan and Olivier Award-winning actress Zoë Wanamaker.

The Birthday Party is one of Harold Pinter’s best known plays and tells the story of a boarding house by the sea run by Meg (Wanamaker) and Petey Boles. Their only guest is Stanley (Jones) whose birthday prompts the titular party, which interrupts the status quo. Stanley is used to having the place largely to himself so the arrival of strangers to his birthday party turns things upside down.

The first time this story was presented to audiences was at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1958 and the critical reaction would prompt its revival on both sides of the Atlantic on numerous occasions since. The most recent occasion in which it was seen in London was back in 2005, which makes this the first major London revival since Pinter’s death in 2008, and it shows that 60 years after its first staging it still has a big role to play on the capital’s theatre scene.

And with a cast that includes some of the biggest names of the British acting world, this will be something on which to keep a close eye. Ian Rickson will direct the talented bunch and as such audiences are in for a real treat when this production runs in London in the New Year.

The Birthday Party runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End from Thursday 18th January 2018 (previews from Tuesday 9th January 2018).
