Arthur Miller’s classic play The Crucible returns to London for a run at the Old Vic Theatre, reintroducing audiences to the allegorical tale set in Salem, Massachusetts in the 1690s and providing those with theatre tickets with the opportunity to see some great talent on the stage. Richard Armitage is set to take on the roe of John Proctor in the production alongside newcomer Samantha Colley as Abigail Williams. Add to this Anna Madeley as Proctor’s accused wife Elizabeth and you have the makings of a must-see show in London.

The Crucible appears as part of a season of productions at the Old Vic Theatre that includes Sophocles’ Electra and a one-man show about Clarence Darrow starring the venue’s Artistic Director Kevin Spacey.

The story takes us back to the time of the Salem Witch Trials at the end of the seventeenth century and amongst this chaos John Proctor – whose own wife is accused of witchcraft – must attempt to convince the residents of the town to stop believing the lies perpetuated by Abigail Williams. It is a story of mass hysteria as a whole town is gripped by fear and erroneously points the finger.

It was famously penned as an allegory for the McCarthyist era of the United States, a time in which Senator Joseph McCarthy led a campaign to rid the US of communism, destroying careers and lives in the process. Arthur Miller himself was among those that fell victim to this during the time.

Richard Armitage is an actor whose screen work has ensured that he will be a familiar face to anyone that heads to the Old Vic Theatre. This Christmas he will once again be seen as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, following up his appearances in An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation Of Smaug. He has also appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger and stage productions like the Twenty-Four Hour Plays Celebrity Gala at the Old Vi in 2010 and The Duchess Of Malfi for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Under the direction of Yaёl Farber, London theatre audiences will see The Crucible at the Old Vic Theatre from Wednesday 9th July 2014 (with previews from Tuesday 24th June 2014).
