The Doctor

Age Restriction: Suitable for ages 14+

Important Info: The Doctor includes the discussion of suicide and the description of suicide methods, with an age recommendation of 14+.

Delivering ‘one of the performances of the year’ (Evening Standard), Juliet Stevenson stars in the West End transfer of Robert Icke’s sold-out, five-star The Doctor at the Duke of York’s Theatre from April 2020. As a patient’s last days are approaching, The Doctor follows a medical professional torn between her differing views in a whirlwind of gender, race and identity politics. So, if you want to see a critically-acclaimed, thought-provoking play, you’ll want to see The Doctor.

On an ordinary day, at a private hospital, a young woman fights for her life. When a priest arrives to save her soul, her doctor, Professor Ruth Woolf denies the priest entry to the patient’s bedside. Facing a moral dilemma, Woolf’s initial reaction sees a divided nation take sides, polarising societies around them. The Doctor examines how individuals perceive one another.

The Doctor is not the only production to transfer into the West End. Audiences can also see the London premiere of Touching The Void later this year, as well as new revivals of Noises Off and Ghost Stories to the Garrick Theatre and Ambassadors Theatre respectively. But, if you’re looking to see a medical drama, you’ll want to book tickets for The Doctor.

Juliet Stevenson will reprise her performance as Professor Ruth Woolf in The Doctor.

The Doctor is based on the 1912 play Professor Bernhardi by Arthur Schnitzler.
