Review Summary
Average Rating: 5 out of 5 stars based on 2 review(s)

The Charing Cross Theatre continues to provide the home to some new and exciting work as The Knowledge, originally devised as a television film from the 1970s, is adapted to the stage and brought in front of London theatre audiences in 2017.

It appears in a year that also brings Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman In White to the venue, showing that this is an enticing place to be in the latter half of 2017.

The original television production of The Knowledge starred Maureen Lipman amongst the actors taking on the parts and she returns to direct this stage version, in which she takes Simon Block’s adapted script and provides audiences with an insight into the world of taxi drivers in 1970s London.

The ‘Knowledge’ is part of what it takes to be a black cab driver in London, which tasks prospective drivers with knowing intimate details of London’s streets, including, but not limited to, a vast array of routes through central London and even the positioning of major London establishments. This vigorous test is the focus of the play, with a group of people attempting the process in order to improve their lives.

The original film was well-received and is still regarded amongst the best British television films, so it is a story that still resonates with audiences.

Then again we would expect no less from the late Jack Rosenthal, whose career included penning scripts for some of the nation’s best known television shows. Whilst he wrote stage productions like Bar Mitzvah Boy and Our Gracie, he is better known for Coronation Street, London’s Burning and more during a decades-long career.

And now his work can be experienced all over again as The Knowledge makes its way to the stage under the direction of Maureen Lipman. It plays at the Charing Cross Theatre from Monday 4th September 2017.
