The Lehman Trilogy

The show headed to the Piccadilly Theatre in 2019 is a story set across 160 years, focusing on the rise and fall of an American Empire, providing audiences with a gripping insight into a family business whose fate was tied by the hands of the 2008 financial crash.

The Lehman Trilogy is that story. Stefano Massini’s Italian-language play was first seen by audiences in 2015 and was granted an English-language translation by Ben Power in 2018 with a premiere at the Lyttelton National Theatre. Now that English-language version makes its way to the West End, with Simon Russell Beale and others continuing in their roles as various generations of the Lehman brothers.

Those credentials would ordinarily be enough to attract a considerable audience, but add the presence of director Sam Mendes to the mix and you have the makings of one of the most talked-about shows of the year.

That show begins in 1844 and demonstrates how three young men from Bavaria were able to build an empire that would transcend the century, beginning with a simple store and expanding to banking as the money rolled in. So after beginning in the 1840s we go forwards in time, meeting new generations of the family and exploring how the changing climates and attitudes shaped the business, eventually leading to its collapse at the hands of the 2008 Financial Crisis.

Now, ten years after the crash, audiences can still remember those world-changing times and they will clearly relish in a story that explores a family business as it rises and falls through time.

As this story focuses on more than one generation of the Lehman family, Russell Beale portrays both Henry Lehman and Philip Lehman in the production and he arrives in the West End having played the parts at the Lyttelton National Theatre and in New York (where the production runs prior to its West End engagement). The veteran actor’s credits include Collaborates at the National Theatre, Privates On Parade at the Noël Coward Theatre, Temple at the Donmar Warehouse and Mr Foote’s Other Leg at the Hampstead Theatre, amongst a host of other acclaimed roles.

Russell Beale appears in the production alongside Ben Miles and Adam Godley, with Sam Mendes directing them from Power’s adapted script.

Following its National Theatre and New York runs, The Lehman Trilogy plays at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End from Saturday 11th May 2019.
