Over the years we have witnessed some acclaimed stories from the writer Martin McDonagh, whether in the form of his screen work or his plays, and this continues in 2018 as the West End is treated to a revival of his 2002 show The Lieutenant Of Inishmore.

A part of the unfinished Aran Islands Trilogy, The Lieutenant Of Inishmore reunites Michael Grandage with McDonagh’s material, with Grandage previously directing The Cripple Of Inishmaan with Daniel Radcliffe in 2013.

And this time around another well known performer has been recruited to tackle the lead role. Aiden Turner, best known for his screen work in the likes of Poldark, will take on the role of Padraic in the darkly comic tale set against the backdrop of the Northern Irish peace talks.

The show appears in the West End during a high profile year for director Michael Grandage, who also helms the anticipated Red at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2018, with Alfred Molina reprising his role from the Donmar Warehouse production (also directed by Grandage).

So this is an exciting time for the acclaimed director, who has opted to tackle a story that is highly regarded amongst the back catalogue of writer Martin McDonagh. It is set in Ireland in the early 1990s, with Padraic a member of the IRA splinter group the INLA, as he ventures back to the island of Inishmore after discovering that his cat has been killed, whilst in the process demonstrating his intense penchant for violence.

So to depict this troubled individual, Grandage turns to Irish actor Aiden Turner, whose work has been seen around the world thanks to his numerous film and television roles, in addition to previous theatre credits like The Plough And The Stars at the Barbican Theatre, Romeo & Juliet at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, and Cyrano at the Project Arts Theatre, Dublin, amongst others.

It will be a fascinating insight into a darkly violent mind, a form that has served McDonagh well via his numerous dark plays and films, the latter of which includes In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and 2018’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. It makes this one of 2018’s must-see plays.

The Lieutenant Of Inishmore runs at the Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End from Saturday 23rd June 2018, following on from shows like Girl From The North Country, which play at the venue earlier in the year.
