The Son

Important Info: Please note there is no interval.

After playing for just six weeks at the Kiln Theatre earlier this year, The Son will transfer to the Duke of York’s Theatre. Written by award-winning playwright Florian Zeller and translated by Christopher Hampton, the play rounds off a trilogy (completed by The Father and The Mother) in a story where impacts on family events for young children can often be testing. So, if you want to see a West End premiere that’s poignant, you’ll want to see The Son.

Two years before the play is set, Nicolas is a smiling young boy with no apparent troubles. However, as audiences meet Nicolas, they see him going through a challenging phase. Facing up to his parents’ divorce, he doesn’t know what to do. Skipping classes and lying, he’s torn between living with his father and mother, enjoying separate lives away from each other. But at some point, options are going to dry up. What can Nicolas do then?

This is not the first time that an off-West End production has transferred to the West End. The Twilight Zone started out at the Almeida Theatre, while Fiddler on the Roof transferred from the Menier Chocolate Factory to the Playhouse Theatre. However, The Son is certain to make audiences consider their family relationships and sense of belonging, soon to play at the Duke of York’s Theatre.
