Two for the Seesaw

William Gibson had a hugely successful writing career during the 20th century, wowing audiences with productions like The Miracle Worker and The Golden Boy musical, but it all started with his debut play Two For The Seasaw, which returns to the stage in 2018 in London’s West End.

The latest production of the classic play makes its way to the Trafalgar Studios 2 in July, entertaining a new generation of theatregoers on Whitehall, with cast members like Charles Dorfman and Elsie Bennet playing lead roles and Gary Condes directing.

The story of an unlikely romance that changes two people in profound ways, Two For The Seasaw following the characters of Jerry, a lawyer from Nebraska, and Gittel, a dancer. After separating from his wife, Jerry relocates to a small and rough-around-the-edges apartment in New York. After meeting Gittel and beginning a new life with her, including a new job and opportunities for them both, they both make important decisions that will have a huge effect on their relationship going forwards.

As well as being a 1958 play, Two For The Seesaw is also known for its 1962 film adaptation, which starred Robert Mitchum and Shirley MacLaine.

But as the debut play from writer William Gibson it has an important place in history. It was a learning experience for the playwright and led, one year later, to his most famous play The Miracle Worker, which earned numerous awards.

And now Two For The Seesaw plays at the Trafalgar Studios 2 on Whitehall, with Charles Dorfman and Elsie Bennet in the lead roles, from Thursday 12th July 2018.
