Angela Carter’s classic 1991 novel Wise Children was the final novel from an author whose career made her one of the most renowned of the 20th century. Now it has been adapted for the stage by Emma Rice and it heads to the Old Vic Theatre in London for a run that begins in early October.

The classic story of the tangled web of a family spread across different areas of London, with twists and turns that could have come straight out of a Shakespeare play, Wise Children deals with major coincidences, family mysteries and more, making for a memorable time at one of London’s most prestigious venues.

We meet a range of characters in Wise Children, including the main characters of Dora and Nora Chance, whom we meet on their 70th birthday, plus their father Melchior Hazard, whom we meet on his 100th birthday, along with their half-brother Tristram Hazard and more. Tristram’s wife Tiffany is missing, Melchior’s twin brother Peregrine (Dora’s legal father) is believed dead and Dora reminisces about her life in Angela Carter’s enthralling story.

During her lifetime, Carter penned a range of books that touched on some unique themes. Her back catalogue also includes Night At The Circus, The Passion Of New Eve, Love and Heroes & Villains, amongst others.

And Emma Rice is a great choice to bring her work to the stage. An experienced theatrical practitioner, she has been behind some great productions in the West End and on UK tours, cementing her own legacy for some time to come.

Wise Children appears at the Old Vic Theatre in a year that also brings Sylvia, 17c and Sea Wall during another impressive year. It runs at the Lambeth venue from Monday 8th October 2018.
