Built by the Theatre Guild in 1925, the venue was later renovated in the 1950s. In 1981, the theatre was renamed The Virginia to commemorate Virginia M. Biger, later called the August Wilson Theatre in 2005 after the African-American playwright.

There is no dress code for performances at the August Wilson Theatre, with latecomers allowed into productions at the discretion of show breaks or management.
