A Christmas Carol for the Old Vic again in 2018

A Christmas Carol - Old Vic Theatre

Considering the cold spring that we’ve had this year, audiences will be forgiven for thinking that the 2017 Christmas season is still with us, but that hasn’t stopped announcements from emerging regarding the 2018 Christmas lineup, with shows like The Band already revealed in the West End.

Another seasonal production has a more traditional Christmas flavour, however, as it concerns Jack Thorne and Matthew Warchus’ production of A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic Theatre, which is set to run again from November.

Audiences will remember the production running from November 2017 as well and whilst it hasn’t been announced who will be portraying Scrooge at the Old Vic, it was well known screen star Rhys Ifans who stepped into the part during its previous run. The result was a memorable production of a classic tale that has been seen in the capital in many forms over the years.

The story focuses on the grumpy old Ebenezer Scrooge, whose attitude towards Christmas is summed up by the immortal line “bah, humbug” and whose actions are defined by his ill-treatment of his employees. On The Night Before Christmas, however, he is visited by ghosts that show him the error of his way, showing him his past, future and present. Hopefully, he can change before it is too late.

Jack Thorne pens the script, having previously worked on a range of other productions around the capital, perhaps most notably Harry Potter And The Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre. He is known for adapting numerous stories, from Woyzeck at the Old Vic Theatre, Let The Right One In at the Royal Court Theatre and The Physicists at the Donmar Warehouse. He is also an accomplished screenwriter whose work has been seen on both the small and the big screen.

There are plenty of shows to whet your appetite prior to the return of A Christmas Carol, however, as the Old Vic welcomes Sylvia, Mood Music and A Monster Calls in 2018. It is currently the home of the adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny & Alexander, which continues until mid-April.

A Christmas Carol runs at the Old Vic Theatre from 5th December 2018 (previews from 27th November 2018) to 19th January 2019.
