The Lieutenant of Inishmore - Noel Coward Theatre

Michael Grandage has made this a big week for high profile West End announcements, with two big shows revealed starring well known names.

One of them is Red with Alfred Molina, but another is the Aiden Turner’s starring role in The Lieutenant of Inishmore, set to play at the Noël Coward Theatre from June 2018. It will be a source of big excitement for Turner’s many fans, who have followed his television performances, and will also provide London theatregoers with another opportunity to witness the work of writer Martin McDonagh.

The play takes a darkly comedic look at the situation in Ireland in the early 1990s, with the main character Padraic a member of the INLA, which has splintered off from the IRA. The story focuses on his trip back to the island of Inishmore when he discovers that his cat has been killed, leading him on a horrifying story of revenge.

The play forms part of McDonagh’s unfinished Aran Islands Trilogy, which also includes The Cripple of Inishmaan, which was last staged in London at the Noël Coward Theatre with Daniel Radcliffe, also with Michael Grandage directing.

So just as that last production starred a well known actor, so too does The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, with Aiden Turner stepping into the role of Padraic. The Irish actor is best known for his work in the series Poldark and Being Human, plus the films The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies.

As for his stage work, The Lieutenant Of Inishmore will mark Turner’s West End debut, though he has previously appeared in stage productions like The Plough and the Stars at the Barbican Theatre, in addition to a range of Irish productions such as Romeo & Juliet at the Abbey Theatre.

The Noël Coward Theatre is currently the home of Labour of Love, which will soon be replaced by Girl From the North Country. The latter opens in December and takes audiences back to the Great Depression in the 1930s, playing at the West End venue until March.

The Lieutenant Of Inishmore plays at the Noël Coward Theatre later in the year from Saturday 23rd June 2018 to Saturday 8th September 2018.
