A Christmas Carol - Old Vic Theatre

Over the summer we got word on various shows set to head to the capital this Christmas. Some of them are returning favourites, with The Snowman making its annual pilgrimage to the Peacock Theatre, but another is a revamp of an age-old favourite.

A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens’ classic tale of the embittered old Ebenezer Scrooge, is set to play at the Old Vic Theatre from November, with Rhys Ifans taking on the iconic role in this re-imagined version from director Matthew Warchus and writer Jack Thorne.

But now we have word on those names set to take the trip back to Victorian London with Ifans as Alex Gaumond is revealed as the new Marley alongside John Dagleish as Bob Cratchit, Myra McFadyen as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Golda Rosheuvel as Ghost of Christmas Present.

They form part of the classic story of Scrooge, a bitter old man living in Dickens’ London, who treats his employees poorly and utters the immortal line “Bah, humbug!” But then, on the night before christmas he is visited by a series of ghosts who show him the error of his ways. It means that he might be a changed man once Christmas Day arrives.

Alex Gaumond will provide one of many familiar faces in the role of Marley as he has appeared in a range of west end shows over the years, as well as other productions across the country. 2017 saw him appear in Caroline Or Change at the Chichester Festival Theatre, whilst his other credits include The Taming Of The Shrew at Shakespeare’s Globe and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the Savoy Theatre. He previously played Bob Cratchit in a staging of A Christmas Carol at the Lyceum Theatre in 2016.

A Christmas Carol has been no stranger to the capital in recent years, of course, with last year bringing Simon Callow as Scrooge to the Arts Theatre, whilst previous performances have included appearances by Jim Broadbent and Gareth Hale, amongst various others. So it is a popular story for the London theatre treatment, attracting some interesting names to the lead role.

Other cast members for the new production include Melissa Allan, Jamie Cameron, Erin Doherty, Toby Eden, Oliver Evans, Tim van Eyken, Grace Fincham, Siena Kelly, Eugene McCoy, Maria Omakinwa, Alastair Parker Ethan Quinn, Golda Rosheuvel and Lenny Rush.

A Christmas Carol runs at the Old Vic Theatre from November 2017.
