Chicago - Phoenix Theatre

Since Chicago was revived in the West End, with its run at the Phoenix Theatre beginning earlier this year, all eyes have been on the casting choices for Billy Flynn, with Cuba Gooding Jr. playing the role when it opened and Martin Kemp replacing him in early July.

This August, however, all eyes will be on the performer set to portray lead female role Roxie Hart, with 2008 X Factor winner Alexandra Burke replacing Sarah Soetart. It is the latest musical credit for a star who has previously appeared in The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre.

Chicago is the iconic Broadway musical that centres on the character of Roxie Hart, who is thrown in jail for the murder of her husband. It is the 1920s when the concept of the celebrity criminal is all the rage, but Roxie wants to be in the spotlight for better reasons and soon teams up with the Vaudevillian performer Velma Kelly to make it to the top. First, however, they must recruit the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn to help them in their bids for freedom.

Musical numbers include All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, I Can’t Do It Alone, Razzle Dazzle and Nowadays, amongst a host of others.

In addition to The X Factor and The Bodyguard, Alexandra Burke has amassed many credits as performing artist in the charts and on the stage, releasing albums and singles whilst embarking on UK tours. Her stage musical work, however, includes some well known shows like Chess at the London Coliseum, Sister Act on a UK tour and a nationwide tour of The Bodyguard following its successful West End run.

Whilst Alexandra Burke joins the cast, audiences will also be able to witness the ongoing performances of Martin Kemp as Billy Flynn, Josefina Gabrielle as Velma Kelly, Mazz Murray as Mamma Morton and Paul Rider as Amos Hart.

Chicago is booking at the Phoenix Theatre for performances up to Saturday 5th January 2019. Alexandra Burke will play Roxie Hart from Monday 16th August 2018 to Saturday 14th October 2018.
