Alfred Molina - Red

If this week’s news is anything to go by, some big names are headed to the West End in 2018, with Aiden Turner announced for The Lieutenant Of Inishmoore and, to add to that, Aldred Molina has also been revealed to be appearing in Red at the Wyndham’s Theatre.

The latter is huge for London theatregoers as this will be a full revival of a show that originally appeared in 2009, when Molina previously portrayed the role of Rothko.

Just as he did back in 2009, Michael Grandage will take on directing duties, leading both Molina and his upcoming co-star Alfred Enoch when the show begins performances from May 2018.

Red focuses on the real life painter Mark Rothko, who lived between 1903 and 1970. We catch up with him in the late 1950s, in New York, as he is putting together some murals for the Four Seasons restaurant, whilst his assistant Ken (Enoch) tends to his needs. Along the way Ken questions Rothko’s motives, challenging his opinions on art and confronting him on his decision to take on a commercial project.

Rothko’s work is linked with abstract expressionism and he earned widespread recognition during his career, with this play emerging many decades after his death and continuing his legacy further. Penned by the US playwright and screenwriter John Logan, it starred both Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne when it was first staged at the Donmar Warehouse.

Molina is no stranger to the London stage of course, having appeared in both Speed-the-Plow and The Night Of The Iguana at the National Theatre, alongside some high profile Broadway productions. He is better known as a screen actor, however, with credits like Spider-Man 2, The Da Vinci Code and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, amongst many others.

For now, the Wyndham’s Theatre is the home of Heisenberg: The Uncertainty Principle, a production that is set to close its doors in January. After that we will be treated to Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night with Jeremy Irons in a lead role, from January to April 2018.

Red will then follow at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Friday 4th May 2018, continuing until Saturday 28th July 2018.
