Summer and Smoke - Duke of York's Theatre

Earlier in the year the acclaimed Tennessee Williams play Summer and Smoke, which takes audiences back to the Mississippi of the early 20th century, was revived at the Almeida Theatre in North London. That production received positive critical reception and a great response from audiences, so now it has been announced that it is to transfer to the West End.

So Summer And Smoke now heads to the Duke of York’s Theatre, rounding out a great year for the venue on St Martin’s Lane, which welcomes The Moderate Soprano (currently running) and King Lear (starring Sir Ian McKellen later in the summer) during the course of 2018.

Summer And Smoke is set across the first 16 years of the 20th century, where we meet the characters of Alma and John, who both grow up living next door to one another and who meet as adults in a life-changing way. Alma finds herself on the receiving end of his seductions, only to reject him, upending her life and in the process convincing her to leave her old self behind.

The play was first penned in the late 1940s and made its first appearance on Broadway in 1948, appearing during a peak period of Tennessee Williams’ career, a time in which plays like A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie also appeared. The acclaimed US writer would also pen Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Orpheus Descending, The Night Of The Iguana and Sweet Bird of Youth during a career that would continue right up until his death in 1983.

Summer And Smoke would not get its UK debut until the early 21st century, but it now gets a major new revival in London’s West End thanks to its success at the Almeida Theatre in Islington. Not only will it retain its director in Rebecca Frecknall, but also its cast, which includes Seb Carrington, Nancy Crane, Patsy Ferran, Eric MacLennan, Forbes Masson, Matthew Needham, Tok Stephen and Anjana Vasan.

Summer And Smoke runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Tuesday 20th November 2018 (previews from Saturday 10th November 2018) to Saturday 19th January 2019.
