An Emotional Goodbye from Holden as She Makes the Way for Kimberley Walsh on Wednesday

Back in August it was revealed that Amanda Holden would be stepping down from “Shrek The Musical” in October to take time away due to pregnancy and last night (Monday 3rd October 2011) saw her take her final bow onstage. It means that the stage is now set for Kimberley Walsh to take on the role of Princess Fiona from Wednesday 5th October 2011 as the production continues its successful run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Her departure has been covered by many newspapers and online sources today with many citing her twitter feed where she was open with her emotions throughout the night. It was clear that it was an emotional evening and that stepping away from the role she had made her own since the production opened in May 2011 was a tough one.

Holden portrays Princes Fiona in the production alongside Nigel Lindsay, Richard Blackwood and Nigel Harman. The musical is an adaptation of the famous movie “Shrek”, which appeared in cinemas a decade ago and told the story of the ogre of the same name, who dwells in a swamp and embarks on an adventure alongside a wise-cracking donkey. Along the way they rescue a princess trapped in a castle, unaware that this was a ruse to break to attract a handsome prince and break a terrible curse that has fallen on her.

Kimberley Walsh is best known for her work with Girls Aloud, with whom she has released a range of singles and albums. Alongside Cheryl Cole, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle and Sarah Harding she has appeared on stages worldwide following their win on the talent show “Popstars the Rivals” (a precursor to “Pop Idol” and “The X Factor”). Since then she has also appeared in the West End and she has credits that include “Les Misérables” at the Queen’s Theatre.

Walsh appears as Princess Fiona from Wednesday 5th October 2011. Meanwhile, “Shrek the Musical” continues its run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and is currently booking to Sunday 21st October 2012.
