Pressure - Ambassadors Theatre

Back in April we first got word that David Haig’s acclaimed play Pressure, which ran at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2014, would be making its way to the West End in 2018, 74 years after the D-Day landings.

At the time it was indicated that Haig himself would be taking on the role of Group Captain James Stagg, the role he played at Chichester, at its premiere in Edinburgh and on its 2018 UK tour. Malcolm Sinclair and Lauren Rogers were also announced.

And now we know the names of those set to join them in the production, with Andrew MacBean set to portray Air Chief Marshall Sir Leigh Mallory. MacBean, of course, is known for a wide range of productions around the capital and so he will provide another familiar face for London theatergoers. His credits include Twelfth Night at the National Theatre, Hedda Gabler at the Old Vic Theatre and 1:36:2600 at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

In Pressure the focus is on those working behind the scenes of D-Day, with Group Captain James Stagg the RAF meteorologist who was given the task of predicting the weather conditions ahead of the 1944 landings, with tension rising as others reject his warnings of severe storms. In history he was famously responsible for convincing General Eisenhower to change the date of the assault.

Back when the show was initially announced, David Haig commented on its West End transfer, saying “I am absolutely thrilled that Pressure is transferring to the West End on 6 June. What sublime timing that my play about the weather forecaster for D-Day, will open on the 74th anniversary of the D-Day invasions.

“The play has been profoundly fulfilling to write and perform. It's about one of the great unsung heroes of the 20th century and I'm so proud that his story will now be available to a West End audience. I couldn't be more excited.”

In addition to MacBean the newly announced cast members also include Philip Cairns, Robert Heard, Mark Jax, David Killick, Mark Kitto, William Mannering, Molly Roberts and Bert Seymour.

Pressure is set to open at the Ambassadors Theatre on Wednesday 6th June 2018, with a run taking it to Saturday 1st September 2018.
