Caroline, or Change - Playhouse Theatre

Earlier in the year word first emerged that Caroline, or Change, a musical that previously played at the Hampstead Theatre and Chichester Festival Theatre, would be making its way to the Playhouse Theatre in London’s West End. It is the latest in a long line of productions that have enjoyed success at the Chichester venue before heading to the capital and audiences are anticipating another successful show.

Now, however, we know the names of those set to join the production at the Playhouse, with Shardon D Clarke already announced earlier in the year and more names like Angela Caesar and Sue Kelvin revealed this week.

Caroline, Or Change is a musical that was first seen in London at the National Theatre in 2006 and tells the story of Caroline, an African American maid whom we meet at Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1963. During the course of the show she forms a bond with the son of the Gellman family, for whom she works, and the young boy, Noah, finds solace in her company following the death of his mother and his father’s new partnership. As the show progresses she also faces a legal and moral financial conundrum as well.

Angela Caesar previously appeared in Caroline, Or Change when it was staged at the Hampstead Theatre and has amassed a range of credits over the years that include Seven Brides For Seven Brothers at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Kismet at the Arcola Theatre, Varjak Paw at the Old Vic Theatre and The Silent Twins at the Almeida Theatre, amongst others.

Sue Kelvin, who plays Grandma Gellman in Caroline, Or Change, also appeared in the Hampstead Theatre production and also performed in shows like Private Lives at the Gielgud Theatre and Travelling Light at the National Theatre, to name but a few.

They aren’t the only cast member revealed in the current announcement though, with other names announced like Naana Agyei-Ampadu, Keisha Amponsa Banson, Alastair Brookshaw,  Me’sha Bryan, Dujonna Gift-Simms, Teddy Kempner, Ako Mitchell, Abiona Omonua, Vincent Pirillo, Tanisha Spring and Lauren Ward with Cassiopeia Berkeley-Agyepong, Zalika Henry, Laura Medforth, Timothy Quinlan and Teddy Wills. Meanwhile, Isaac Forward, Aaron Gelkoff and Jack Meredith alternate as Noah, with further child characters portrayed by Mark Mwangi, Kenya Sandy, Jeremiah Waysome, Josiah Choto, David Dube and Raphael Higgins-Hume.

Tony Kushner’s Caroline, Or Change, directed by Michael Longhurst, opens at the Playhouse Theatre on Tuesday 20th November 2018.
