Strictly Ballroom - Piccadilly Theatre

Over the years Baz Lurhmann has been responsible for some of the biggest films in pop culture, whether it is the modern-day Shakespeare adaptation Romeo + Juliet or the smash hit Moulin Rouge!

But back in the early 1990s his breakout hit was the Australian film Strictly Ballroom, which presented dance and romance on the screen in a format familiar to audiences. It managed to both stick to conventions and turn them upside down and ensured Lurhmann would be a force with which to be reckoned in the decades to come.

Fast forward to 2014 and a stage version of the show was premiered in Sydney, with a book by Lurhmann and Craig Pearce (subsequently adapted to the stage by Terry Johnson). That show managed to transfer to other venues Down Under whilst also attracting interest on this side of the globe.

So now we fast forward to 2017 and the show is set to make its way to the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End, following its successful appearance at the West Yorkshire Playhouse last year, and with Drew McOnie directing it will be an opportunity for audiences to witness the work of an exciting director and choreographer.

After all, McOnie has choreographed everything from Jesus Christ Superstar at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre to The Lorax at the Old Vic and In The Heights at the King’s Cross Theatre, whilst directing The Other Palace’s The Wild Party and another Regent’s Park show in 2017’s On The Town.

For Strictly Ballroom he turns his attentions to a story that focuses on the character of Scott, an Australian ballroom dancer whose renegade style and pursuit of romance puts him at odds with those around him.

The musical adaptation includes many songs that entertained audiences on the big screen in the early 1990s, so theatregoers will find that nostalgic twist to proceedings when they head to the Piccadilly Theatre.

So keep your ears peeled for more information on Strictly Ballroom as news comes in, including announcements regarding casting. What we know so far is that the show will begin performances in March 2018.
