Love Theatre Day

On the 18th of November 2015 over 300 theatres and groups from across the globe adopted the #LoveTheatreDay hashtag for a day dedicated to everything theatre. Throughout the day there were different conversations to get involved in with many of our favourite West End venues giving us a glimpse behind the scenes and answering fan questions.

To start off Love Theatre Day we asked our followers some questions of our own:

Question: What’s your all-time favourite West End Show?
The top picks were between Matilda and Phantom of the Opera where Ben Forster will be joining the cast as Phantom in 2016 – we can’t wait either!

Question: If you could spend the day backstage at any theatre which one would it be?
Elf, Les Misérables and Cats were the most popular choices here!

We also ran a poll to find out whether our followers preferred to watch musicals or plays – 80% voted for musicals.

Many theatres also spilled their backstage secrets to give us a better understanding of just how much prep and hard work goes into creating our favourite London shows. For example, did you know that trainers are the most frequently replaced costume in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time? Or that Billy Elliot has 76 cast members? Also be sure to pay extra attention the next time you see War Horse and be sure to say hello to Joey’s mum who lives in the front of house to welcome guests as they arrive.

During this part of the day we had the chance to ask the many West End theatres and productions well, anything we like! Here’s what they had to say:

Question: Can you tell us something funny that happened at the theatre yesterday?

“Yesterday? Nothing particular, but over the years we've had some amazing comedians on our stage and in our wings.”
Savoy Theatre

There were some funny dance moves from the audience in the finale! We see everything!
Mamma Mia

Question: Which cast members are more likely to be caught horsing around backstage?

“We are all very well behaved all of the time…”
War Horse (Not sure if we believe them!)

Question: Do any of the cast members have any strange rituals they have to do before the show starts?

“Not strange but they do like a team huddle!”
Close To You: The Burt Bacharach Musical

Question: Which backstage role at the theatre requires the most creativity?

“Good question! We think they all do, but stage managers certainly have to do a lot of creative problem-solving!”
