The Performer Appeared in the US Version of the Show, off-Broadway, in 2010

Back in April it was announced that Susan Stroman would be directing the US musical The Scottsboro Boys at the Garrick Theatre upon its transfer from The Young Vic Theatre. Now names have emerged for the cast, with Brandon Victor Dixon reprising his role of Haywood Patterson from the US version.

He is joined by Colman Domingo, Julian Glover, Dawn Hope, James T Lane, Dex Lee, Forrest McClendon, Rohan Pinnock-Hamilton, Richard Pitt, Emile Ruddock and Carl Spencer.

Kander and Ebb’s The Scottsboro Boys was first seen by audiences in 2010 in an off-Broadway production before transferring to Broadway, receiving numerous Tony Award nominations in the process. It tells the story of nine black men who are travelling by train through the Alabama city of Scottsboro in the 1930s. The teenagers are hoping to start a new life but this is dashed when two white women accuse them all of rape. There is no evidence to support the accusation and one of the women even recants their story but this does not stop injustice from unfolding in a time of discrimination.

Brandon Victor Dixon is an American performer and in addition to The Scottsboro Boys on and off Broadway, he has also appeared in Motown The Musical, the high profile Broadway production from 2013, The Color Purple, Rent, Cotton Club Parade, House Of Flowers and the Chicago production of The Lion King. He is an award-nominated actor and audiences with theatre tickets might also recognise him from screen work that includes Law & Order Criminal Intent and The Good Wife, among others.

The production follows the anticipated return of Let It Be, the Beatles musical that makes its way back to the West End following its previous run at the Savoy Theatre (it originally opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre, now the home of Book Of Mormon). This time around it runs at the Garrick from July to September and offers an evening of jukebox tracks from the back catalogue of the world’s most famous band.

The Scottsboro Boys then runs at the Garrick Theatre from Monday 20th October 2014 (previews from Saturday 4th October 2014).
