Broadway hit Come From Away headed to the Phoenix Theatre

Phoenix Theatre

One of the most surprising stories of the week comes courtesy of Baz Bamigboye in the Daily Mail, who has got a major scoop upon discovering that Broadway hit Come From Away is set for a West End transfer in early 2019.

The surprise is not just because of the arrival of a brand new show in the capital, but because of what this means for another high profile production. Come From Away, according to Bamigboye, is headed to the Phoenix Theatre, which many will recognise as the current home of Chicago, meaning that the latter will be closing its doors at the venue in the New Year.

Come From Away is a musical set in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001, in particular the planes that were diverted from their intended destinations when flights were grounded in response to the attacks. Many ended up in Newfoundland, with those in the local community coming to their aide and helping them. A heartwarming story about the caring side of humanity, it has won over the hearts of US audiences following its Broadway run.

The show is the work of Irene Sankoff and David Hein , who provide the book, music and lyrics, and whilst it has been in the works since 2012 it was first seen in Canada in 2013, eventually making its way to Broadway in 2017 to great success. This success has not only been felt with the box office receipts but also with its Tony Award-nominations (including one win for Best Direction of a Musical for Broadway director Christopher Ashley). So its arrival in the capital is certain to be the cause for celebration amongst London theatregoers.

Chicago continues at the Phoenix Theatre in the mean time, with Martin Kemp set to take on the role of lawyer Billy Flynn from early July (replacing the current Cuba Gooding Jr.)

The production is currently booking at the Phoenix Theatre for performances up to Saturday 6th October 2018. Come From Away is not officially confirmed as of writing, but is said to be opening in February 2019.
