Hollyoaks Actress Set for the Lead in the Movie-Turned-Musical in the West End

One of many casting announcements to emerge this week comes from the Savoy Theatre in the West End, where “Legally Blonde the Musical” maintains its status in the spotlight by announcing Carley Stenson in the role of Elle Woods. The former “Hollyoaks” actress has already entertained audiences in the show in the role of Margot but will be taking over the lead role from 11th July. It comes during a week in which Shayne Ward is announced for “Rock Of Ages” and Christie Brinkley is announced for “Chicago”.

Carley Stenson’s West End debut occurred when she took on the role of Margot and this will make her role of Elle Woods her first high profile role in Theatreland. To most audiences picking up Theatre Tickets to witness the show, she will be most recognisable as Steph Cunningham in the Channel 4 soap “Hollyoaks”, though she has also appeared in various other programmes on various stations such as “Celebrity Stars in their Eyes”, “Celebrity Scissorhands” and “Identity”.

“Legally Blonde” will also feature Lee Mead in the role of Emmett by the time that Stenson takes over, whilst Nicola Brazil, Natalie Casey (another former “Hollyoaks” cast member), Peter Davison and Siobhan Dillon remain in their respective roles.

In “Legally Blonde the Musical” the plot follows the original 2001 movie closely, with Elle Woods (Stenson – and Reece Witherspoon onscreen) looking forward to her meeting with her boyfriend, whom she hopes plans to tie the knot. When he instead dumps her for someone more serious she is left devastated and after a while she pulls herself together, ditches the credit cards and proves herself by signing up for a course at Harvard Law.

It opened at the Savoy Theatre in 2010 and has since become one of the most successful shows currently running in the capital – from high audience numbers to Laurence Olivier Awards in 2011 – so it can be expected to remain for some time yet. It has since starred the likes of Sheridan Smith, Denise van Outen, Duncan James and Alex Gaumand, among others, in lead roles.

“Legally Blonde the Musical” remains at the Savoy where it is currently booking to Saturday 31st March 2012.
