The Lieutenant of Inishmore - Noel Coward Theatre

Back in November we first heard word on the new production of The Lieutenant of Inishmore set to land in the West End in 2018. At the time of the announcement the casting of Aiden Turner, best known for his work in Poldark, was also revealed with the Irish actor set to portray the twisted lead character of Padraic.

Now the full cast has been unveiled, with the entire list of actors hailing from Ireland, and they include Charlie Murphy and Denis Conway alongside Will Irvine, Brian Martin, Daryl McCormack, Julian Moore-Cook and Chris Walley.

The 2001 play was penned by Martin McDonagh, who is in the spotlight at the moment as the writer and director of the award-winning film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri with Frances McDormand. As such it will provide an avenue for audiences to witness McDonagh’s earlier work for the stage.

It is set in the early 1990s and takes a darkly comedic look at terrorism and the situation in Ireland at the time. Madman Padraic (Turner) is a member of IRA splinter group the INLA (and is considered too violent for them) and the story follows Padraic as he heads back to his home on the island of Inishmore and discovers he beloved cat has been killed, kicking off a horrifying tale of revenge.

The Lieutenant Of Inishmore was the second in McDonagh’s planned Aran Islands trilogy, with the first part taking the form of The Cripple of Inishmaan, which was last seen in the West End in 2013 with Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role.

Whilst audiences will be eager to see Aiden Turner in this show’s lead role, theatregoers will also recognise his fellow cast members. Newly announced Charlie Murphy, for example, has appeared in Peaky Blinders, Ripper Street and Misfits, amongst other television shows. Theatre credits include Disco Pigs at the Young Vic, plus Arlington and Pygmalion, both at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.

The Lieutenant Of Inishmore plays at the Noël Coward Theatre, currently the home of Girl From the North Country, from Saturday 23rd June 2018 to Saturday 8th September 2018.
