Chicago headed to the Phoenix Theatre in 2018

Tuesday, 19th Dec 2017

The Phoenix Theatre, currently the home of the iconic horror The Exorcist, will be making a complete change of gear this March as it welcomes the well known musical Chicago, making its triumphant return to the West End.

The announcement will be of great excitement for fans of Fred Ebb, Bob Fosse and John Kander’s musical, based on Marine Dallas’ play. It will be the first time it has been staged in Theatreland since the run at the Garrick Theatre in 2011/2012 and will provide audiences with their latest opportunity to hear well known musical numbers like All That Jazz and Cell Block Tango, amongst others.

Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart and the friendship that develops between her and Velma Kelly behind bars in 1920s America. The show was originally written to reflect on society’s propensity for celebrity criminals during the era and sees Roxie Hart thrown in prison for the murder of her husband. Now she has the spotlight for which she has yearned for many years and meets with Kelly, a Vaudevillian performer who also wants to be a star, to make their bid for freedom and follow their dreams. All they need is the help of sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn.

The show’s producer Barry Weissler commented on the new announcement, saying “This year we celebrated the production's 21st Anniversary and had our most successful year to date.  CHICAGO is as relevant and timely as the day we opened.

“After spending the last several years touring throughout the UK it feels like we never really left, but we are thrilled to bring the Razzle Dazzle back to the West End.”

Over the years, Chicago has been seen in the West End on numerous occasions, beginning with the original production Cambridge Theatre in 1979. This production, however, is the version that opened at the Adelphi Theatre in 1997 and continued until 2011 (transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in the process). As well as the famous Broadway version, the story is also well known for the big screen adaptation that starred Renée Zellwegger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere.

The horror play The Exorcist, based on William Peter Blatty’s novel and William Friedkin’s film, continues at the Phoenix Theatre until Saturday 10th March 2018. Chicago then opens its doors at the venue on Monday 26th March 2018.
