Broadway’s Roxy Hart to Appear in the West End Production from July to August 2011

** Update - See Delay for Christie Brinkley's Appearance in Chicago **

A host of casting updates have emerged in the West End today, rounding out a week that saw Shayne Ward cast in “Rock Of Ages” and the likes of Peter Capaldi in the upcoming “The Ladykillers”. But the new announcement is particularly significant as it concerns a Broadway actress making her West End debut in the same show that made her name across the pond.

Christie Brinkley will be taking on the role of Roxie Hart in the Cambridge Theatre’s long running hit musical “Chicago” from July to August 2011.

Brinkley made her Broadway debut in the role in April 2011 and follows in the tradition when she steps into the West End version. She is best known for her work as a supermodel and has appeared in an abundance of magazines over the years – from “sports Illustrated” to “Rolling Stone” – whilst also breaking into acting in the early 1980s. Her credits include “National Lampoon’s Vacation”, “The Cosby Show”, “Ugly Betty” and “Mad About You”, in addition to singing credits on the likes of Billy Joel’s “River of Dreams”.

“Chicago” is the well known story that takes audiences back to the windy city in the 1920s at a time when craze of the celebrity criminal was at its peak. In it we meet Roxie Hart, a girl who dreams of a life in the spotlight and instead finds infamy when she is convicted for her husband’s murder. On the inside she meets Velma Kelly, a Vaudevillian performer who murdered her husband-stealing sister, and the pair decide to follow their dreams. So after enlisting the help of the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn they make their bid for freedom.

The show was originally a play in the 1920s that was written by the Chicago Tribune Columnist Maurice Dallas Watkins. It would go on to me re-imagined as a musical under the watch of Fred Ebb, Bob Fosse and John Kander and in addition to numerous appearances in Chicago, on Broadway and in the West End it has also been transformed into a hit movie. The current production opened at the Adelphi Theatre in 1997 and remained there until 2006 after which it emerged at the Cambridge Theatre, where it remains to this day.

Christie Brinkley appears in “Chicago” from Monday 11th July 2011 to Saturday 6th August 2011 (alongside the returning Amra-Faye Wright). The production is currently booking to Saturday 27th August 2011 (after which it is replaced by “Matilda The Musical”).
