Television Actor Taking on the Role of Miss Trunchbull in the Popular West End Production

Matilda The Musical, the Laurence Olivier Award-winning production at the Cambridge Theatre, has announced a new Miss Trunchbull from September 2014. The production currently features Alex Gaumond in the role alongside the likes of James Clyde, Haley Flaherty, Lottie Sicilia, Tasha Chapple and Kay Murphy, among others, but from September it will be the turn of Craige Els to take on the role.

Matilda The Musical is the acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company stage version of the famous book by Roald Dahl, which originally opened at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon before its West End transfer. It has received widespread praise since then, with audiences and critics admiring the book by Dennis Kelly and the musical & lyrics by Tim Minchin.

It tells the story of a 5 year old girl who has extraordinary powers, not only in terms of intellect, but in terms of telekinesis as well. This allows her to put people in their place when they have done wrong and also to overcome an array of obstacles put in her way.

One of the characters that crops up is Miss Trunchbull, who is the main antagonist of the story and Matilda’s head teacher at school. The role has been portrayed by men in fat suits since the show opened.

This remains the case with the casting of Craige Els. The actor is well known for appearing in the likes of Ripper Street, Law & Order: UK and Ripper Street, to name but a few, but he has also carved out a successful career on the stage. He has appeared in numerous West End shows like Christmas With The Rat Pack at the Adelphi Theatre, Never Forget at the Savoy Theatre and Spamalot at the Palace Theatre, in addition to Timon Of Athens at the National Theatre, Blood And Gifts at the National Theatre, Oklahoma! at the Chihcester Festival Theatre and Mamma Mia! on an international tour.

When he takes over, the show also welcomes Matilda Shapland and Violet Tucker who join the performers playing Matilda onstage.

In a year that also sees the likes of Kerry Ellis appearing in Wicked, Craige Els is added to the cast of Matilda The Musical from September 2014. The production is booking at the Cambridge Theatre to Sunday 24th May 2015.
