David Eldridge’s Beginning transferring to the Ambassadors Theatre

Thursday, 16th Nov 2017

In October we heard the sad news that Stomp, the long-running percussive musical from Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, would be closing its doors at the Ambassadors Theatre in January, bringing to an end a run of 15 years in the capital.

But the closure of one show means a venue ready to host another and that cycle plays out with the announcement that Beginning, David Eldridge’s new play at the National Theatre, will be transferring to the venue in the New Year.

The show focuses on the characters of Laura and Danny (Justine Mitchell and Sam Troughton, reprising their roles in the West End), the former throwing a party and the latter the last one standing the next morning. The show focuses on events going forward, with one option for them to continue where the night ended.

The show currently plays at the Dorfman National Theatre, the smallest of the National Theatre spaces, until mid-November and its next run will be a brief one running from January to March 2018.

It is the latest high profile play from Eldridge, whose career has included an array of shows appearing at some of the capital’s prestigious stages, including Holy Warriors at Shakespeare’s Globe, In Basildon at the Royal Court Theatre and The Stock Da’wa at the Hampstead Theatre, amongst others.

But it will mark a distinct change-of-pace for the Ambassadors, which has been the home of Stomp since 2007 when the production transferred from the Vaudeville Theatre. Stomp utilises a range of household items to produce a percussive environment and it has proven popular all over the world, with touring and international productions attracting the crowds. Its closure in the West End came as a surprise, but creators Cresswell and McNicholas has indicated that it could return in the future:
“…we actually feel it’s going to be good for the show to take a break, reconfigure, reinvent and return at some point in the future in a different London venue, where we can present the show in a way that is more in keeping with its original ethos.”

For now, however, audiences have a new West End show to look forward to. Beginning is set to play at the Ambassadors Theatre from Monday 15th January 2018 to Saturday 24th March 2018.
